Security+ vs CISSP — Which One First?

Everyone says Security+ first. Here’s when that advice is wrong.

Google ‘Security+ or CISSP first’ and every result says the same thing: Security+ first, always. For a lot of people, that’s right. But for some of you, it’s holding you back. I hold both certifications, and the real answer is more nuanced than the internet would have you believe.

They’re not on the same ladder.

Security+ is tactical threats, tools, operations, and fundamentals. CISSP is strategic risk management, governance, architecture, and program design. Studying for one doesn’t prepare you for the other. They’re different tools for different career stages. The ‘which first’ question assumes they’re sequential. They’re contextual.

The numbers

Security+: ~63,600 job postings, $15–$20K salary premium, ~$400 exam, no prerequisites. CISSP: ~70,000 job postings, $25–$40K premium, $164K median salary, $749 exam, requires 5 years of experience. Security+ opens entry-level doors. CISSP opens senior and leadership doors. Both are excellent ROI.

When Security+ first is right

New to IT entirely. Pivoting from the help desk. Targeting government/DoD roles. Under three years of security experience. This is the majority of people asking the question, and the default advice is correct for them.

When it’s wrong

You have 5+ years in IT/security, and Security+ is beneath your experience level, go straight to CISSP. You’re in a senior role without a senior cert. CISSP will move the needle, Security+ won’t. You’re from compliance, audit, or IT management,, your experience may already qualify for CISSP. And the really contrarian take: in 2026, maybe neither should be first. Cloud security, AI security, or CySA+ might deliver more value for your specific path. The market rewards specialists.

The framework

Ask three questions. What role am I targeting in the next 12 months? What’s my experience level? What do the job postings actually require? Match the cert to those answers, not to generic advice. And consider the Associate path, pass the CISSP exam now, and earn the experience over six years.

Bottom line

Stop asking ‘which first.’ Start asking ‘what role, what experience, what does the market say.’ That’s your certification strategy.
